Montenegro is a spectacular country formally part of the republic of Yugoslavia. It lies on the Adriatic coast between Croatia and Albania. At 13,938km sq it’s a small country and has a high concentration of mountains, the highest being ‘Bobotov Kuk’ standing proud at 2,522m. Montenegro is home to a vast range of fauna including; bears, wolves, lynx and jackals. It also has a wide variety of wild flowers, some unique to this area of the Balkans. For a small country, Montenegro has an immensely complex history. But bearing in mind that it sits in the middle of the Balkans, it’s been near or on the front lines of many empires including the Roman, the Ottoman, the Austro –Hungarian, the Napoleonic, the Nazi and the Soviet and all its people are said to take seriously only God and war, which is not much of a surprise !
Croatia extends from the furthest eastern edges of the Alps in the northwest to the Pannonia Plain and the banks of the Danube River in the east. It’s central region is covered by the Dinaric mountain range, while its southern parts extend to the Adriatic coast. There are two climate zones in Croatia: Temperate continental climate ( partially mountainous Climate ) that prevails in the inland parts and Mediterranean climate that dominates along the Adriatic coast and is characterized by a lot of sunny days, dry and hot summers, mild and rainy winters. The currency used is called the Kuna ( currency code – HKH), which refers to a marten, an animal whose fur was used as a means of payment throughout Croatian history. The subunit is called Lipa and it refers to linden ( lime ) tree. 1 Kuna = 100 Lipa. Foreign currencies can be exchanges at banks, exchange offices, post offices, travel agencies and hotels. At majority locations, it is possible to pay with credit cards, while Kina in cash can be take out from any ATM.
Extreme Ireland have been organising holidays to Slovenia for the last 3 years and they are on of the most successful and enjoyable international tours that we offer. For 2012 we will be organising 2 trips to climb Mount Triglav and visit the National Park of Triglav. You will also get to spend a day in the capital Ljubljana taking in the city castle that day. Book early to ensure your spot as they fill up fast and availability is limited. 2011 was a complete success with a summit rate of over 90%. Even the people who didn't make it to the top of this wonderful mountain had a great time walking, kayaking in Lake Bohinj and just having a great time with us. The average walker who walks every few weeks will have no problem with this. There are some exposed ridges close to the top, which make it very exciting. There is a small section where there is via Ferratta, but any experienced scrambler will just walk this section, but for extra safety we will require everyone to wear their Ferratta kit on summit day. All this gear will be provided by the Extreme Ireland team. You will be in the hands of experienced guides who will look after you all the way.
